Grinding in Enclosed Areas

Peterson policy currently is to wear safety glasses and a face shield when performing any grinding operations. This has typically been sufficient to prevent flying particles from entering the eyes. As we look at recent injuries, however, we are noticing that these two pieces of personal protection equipment may not be adequate when employees are grinding or cutting in enclosed areas (i.e. buckets, scraper bowls). In light of this understanding we will be modifying current policy to include the following guideline:

"When cutting or grinding in enclosed areas where there is potential for material to ricochet around eye protection then goggles with a face shield are required."

As we continue to emphasize the employees' responsibility to recognize, evaluate and control hazards, the partnership also requires that the company do the same. This will help us to progress in our zero accidents culture.
